Minor league baseball top performers for April 20, 2022
Minor League Baseball Top Performers
Seemingly most days this season, one Major League Baseball organization has had multiple top performers in minor league baseball which makes picking either a hitter of the day or pitcher of the day difficult. Tuesday, it was less one team, but more lower-level pitching as a whole to take the turn at making it a difficult choice!
Hitter of the Day
After seven years in the New York Yankees organization, Dermis Garcia signed with the Oakland Athletics as a minor league free agent this offseason. He’s always exhibited power (and plenty of strikeouts) along his minor league path, including 31 home runs in 2021 for the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate. This season, Garcia has swung and missed less with Las Vegas, but his raw power hadn’t really shown up in game until Tuesday. Against El Paso Tuesday, Garcia went 4-5, scoring three runs and driving in three as well, with a double and a pair of home runs, including one off of rehabbing El Paso starter Mike Clevinger to lead off the second inning.
Pitcher of the Day
Not tremendously well known in the shortened 2020 draft out of high school in Texas, Marco Raya did not pitch in complex ball in 2021, leaving him a mystery for many until he showed up and blew away scouts and team officials at fall instructs for the Minnesota Twins. He was pushed to full-season ball with Fort Myers, and he’s shown well in his first two starts, but was elite Tuesday against Dunedin, tossing six innings of shutout ball, allowing one hit and no walks, striking out 10. He has dominated with a fastball that touches 97, working primarily 93-96 with wicked movement at the top and bottom of the zone, which has limited hard contact to an impressive degree. Raya pairs his fastball with a mid-80s plus slider and adds in a cutter and curve to round out his repertoire, though his third and fourth pitches are both more “show me” pitches at this point. I’m personally a fan of his cutter and think it has a high ceiling as a third pitch for him, giving him a potential #2 profile as a starter.

Pitching matchup of the day
Minor league strikeout leader Royber Salinas toes the rubber for the Augusta GreenJackets Wednesday as they host the Fayetteville Woodpeckers. The current Fayetteville starter is TBD, but based on the rotation used this season thus far, it’d slot to Ernesto Jaquez. Jaquez has struck out 14 over 11 innings for Fayetteville with strong numbers this year as well.
