Minor league baseball top performers for April 21, 2022

Minor League Baseball Top Performers

With just a week left in the first month of the minor league baseball season, we’re now seeing numbers start to regulate more with many of the hot starters to the season finding their first slump or the slow starters hit their first hot streak. Let’s take a look at Wednesday’s top performers!

Hitter of the Day
One of the top prospects in Puerto Rico in his draft year, Nelson Velazquez has slowly moved up the Chicago Cubs system with plenty of promise but never put it all together for production until he put up 20 home runs and 17 stolen bases across two levels in 2021 and then absolutely crushed the ball in the Arizona Fall League. Velazquez still has issues with a high strikeout rate, but he can have days just like he did on Wednesday with his immense talent, when he went 4-4 with a walk, smacking a pair of doubles and a pair of home runs for Tennessee. The Cubs will certainly allow Velazquez the opportunity to earn a spot on the roster if he can show he deserves it with production.

Pitcher of the Day
The Houston Astros have a habit of finding quality arms from unique backgrounds, and Adrian Chaidez very well could be their next find. Chaidez didn’t even focus on pitching until he got to junior college, then he was a reliever in college and in his first six minor league appearances. Throughout this time, he’s built his easy delivery into firing bullets, touching 96-97 with his fastball and sitting 93-95 with a sharp, biting slider and a signature Houston downer curve. Chaidez made his first pro start Wednesday, and he shined with six perfect innings, striking out nine for the Astros’ High-A club. Building innings and developing his full repertoire will be the next steps in seeing exactly what Houston has here.

Pitching matchup of the day
Many view Kyle Harrison of Eugene as the future San Francisco Giants ace. The lefty takes the mound on the road against Vancouver Canadians’ Chad Dallas, who the Blue Jays plucked from Tennessee in the fourth round last summer. The two starters have combined for 24 strikeouts in 14 innings without a single earned run between them so far in 2022.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
