Minor League Baseball Top Performers

The postponements that were across the majors Friday were also notable across minor league baseball, setting up a weekend of doubleheaders, including 10 that will take place on Saturday!

Hitter of the Day
Fittingly, heading into a big day of doubleheaders across the minors, the top hitter is a guy who did it in a doubleheader Friday. Matt Wallner was a native Minnesotan that the Twins drafted in 2019 after a college career with Southern Mississippi. He’s struggled to keep his swing and miss in check while also tapping into his big raw power thus far in his minor league career, but Friday is a good example of what he can be when he is on, as he went 5-6 across the two games with a pair of doubles and a pair of home runs, driving in seven runs.

Pitcher of the Day
The Rockies drafted Karl Kauffmann after a long College World Series run with Michigan in 2019 and let him rest rather than making his pro debut. The 2020 pandemic season then led to his pro debut being delayed until 2021. At that point, some shoulder issues and time off the mound led to some notable struggles with control last season for Kauffmann. He’s bounced back this season, using his heavy sinker, slider, and a change to pound the zone. Friday, Kauffmann was able to show what he can be at his best, going eight shutout innings, allowing five hits and no walks, striking out nine against a prospect-laden Binghamton lineup.

Today’s games

Pitching matchup of the day
Mariners fans may want to tune into Saturday’s Arkansas/Frisco game. Sure, Frisco’s Jack Leiter is one of the elite pitching prospects in the game, but he’s opposing George Kirby, the Mariners’ top pitching prospect, and a guy that could potentially be called up to the big league club in the next week or two.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
