Minor League Baseball Top Performers

Minor league baseball provides that doubleheaders are seven-inning games, which meant that the big event no-hitter on Wednesday was a seven-inning no-hitter, but it was a unique experience all the same. Let’s take a look at the rest of the top performers from a fun day around the minor leagues!

Hitter of the Day
A big (6’4″, 250ish pounds) guy, Vinnie Pasquantino was drafted in the 11th round in 2019 out of Old Dominion by the Kansas City Royals with the knowledge that he’d need to hit to have value. Let’s just say that he’s had plenty of value in his minor league career. He caught the eye of plenty in his pro debut as he banged out 33 extra-base hits in just 57 games played in the Appalachian League. Last season, those who hadn’t picked up on the Pasquantino train already were quickly on board as he pounded 64 extra-base hits between High-A and Double-A while posting an absurdly-low 12.5% strikeout rate. He’s continued to hit with Omaha this season, banging on the door of a major league promotion, and a game like he had Wednesday could definitely make the case stronger. He went 5-7 in a big game for the Storm Chasers Wednesday, hitting two doubles and two home runs, driving in five runs.

Pitcher of the Day
Long, lean righty Yorlin Calderon was originally signed by the New York Yankees out of the Dominican Republic in 2018. Calderon works with a heavy sinker/slider combination, leaning more on his low-80s slider than his low-90s sinker. He’s not had a lot of success in previous pro assignments, so the Yankees held him back at extended spring training this season to work on a few things. His first start of the season was Wednesday for Tampa as part of a doubleheader with Lakeland, and he could not have opened his season better. He generated 16 swings and misses while tossing a seven-inning no-hitter, allowing two walks and striking out seven.

Today’s games

Pitching matchup of the day
The St. Louis Cardinals drafted Michael McGreevy in the first round last summer out of UC-Santa Barbara. He struggled in his pro debut, but he’s been excellent with High-A Peoria to open 2022. He was promoted to Double-A Springfield and will make his first start at the level Thursday against Tulsa. The Drillers would send Landon Knack to the mound if they follow their rotation, but the official starter has not yet been announced. Knack was the second-round pick of the Dodgers and has been excellent this season so far in three starts.
