Minor League Baseball Top Performers

Thursday’s games across minor league baseball showed that the season is definitely in full swing as multiple pitchers went seven innings deep into their starts, a sign that teams feel that their arms are stretched out. Always a great thing to get into the meat of the season of baseball!

Hitter of the Day
Now that Adley Rutschman is in the major leagues, the honor of the top catching prospect in the minor leagues is likely passed down to the New York Mets’ Francisco Alvarez. The 20-year-old Alvarez has been holding his own at Double-A Binghamton this season, but he was mired in an extended slump before Thursday, hitting .237/.310/.276 without a home run in 19 games since May 3. He broke out in a big way Thursday against Reading, going 4-4 with a double and a pair of home runs and adding a walk. Mets fans are going to be very excited when Alvarez hits the big league club, likely early in 2023.

Pitcher of the Day
Considered by many the top Houston Astros prospect entering the 2022 season, righty Hunter Brown was originally a fifth-round pick out of a D-II school by the Astros. He has blossomed from that point, using a big fastball that works in the upper-90s with late life. His curve is an impressive pitch, but the sweeping slider that he began to master in 2021 has taken a big step forward this year, giving him arguably three plus pitches on the mount. He has had command issues, and typically those are exasperated when he’s out of the stretch. That’s what made his performance on Thursday so impressive. Brown took the hill for Triple-A Sugar Land and went seven scoreless innings, scattering five hits, walking none, and striking out 10.
