Minor League Baseball Top Performers

All levels of minor league baseball bring excellent action on a daily basis, but often the top performers end up being notable in the higher levels because hitters and pitchers are allowed to spend the entire game showing their skills while teams are attempting to see as many players as possible at lower levels and not overtax exciting young talents until they’re nearly ready for the major leagues. Today, however, we feature two Single-A players as top performers from Tuesday’s games. Let’s check it out!

Hitter of the Day
The Milwaukee Brewers signed Hedbert Perez for $700K out of Venezuela and was advanced enough that the Brewers moved him quickly. He struggled with some free-swinging in his first taste of Single-A in 2021, and he’s worked on that to open the 2022 season, but the potential for plus power and above-average speed is in Perez’s profile. When he is on, the ball absolutely leaps off his bat, and Tuesday was definitely one of those “on” days as Perez went 4-5 with four runs and four RBI, smacking three doubles and a home run for Carolina.

Pitcher of the Day
Lefty Luis Palacios was originally signed by the Marlins in 2016, and he’s been part of the system since, never advancing beyond Single-A, despite impressive numbers. Palacios is a guy whose fastball tops out at 90, so he doesn’t have elite velocity, but he does have a plus change that mirrors his fastball so well that Baseball Savant actually classes his fastball and change as the same pitch! On Tuesday, he went eight scoreless innings for Jupiter, allowing four hits and no walks, striking out nine. He generated 14 swings and misses over his start. Palacios varies the shape of his slider from a mid-80s sharp breaker to a 74-77 MPH sweeping slider. He also adds in a rarely used true curveball. With the variety in pitches, he could work as a backend starter or potential multi-inning option from the left side with plus control, which he has shown. His stuff can be “hittable” already at low levels, however, so whether he can translate up the chain is going to be tough.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
