Minor League Baseball Top Performers

While the pitching performances across minor league baseball were excellent, a relief performance ended up taking the top spot, and a utility infielder’s performance at the plate ended up being the best hitting performance of Friday as well. Let’s take a look at the top dogs around the minors!

Hitter of the Day
Originally a seventh-round selection from Oregon, Mitchell Tolman worked his way up the Pirates system through 2019 before the pandemic. He was a minor league free agent in 2021 and played in the Giants system. He then signed with the Guardians system this offseason and has played with Columbus this year, posting an excellent .976 OPS while playing around the infield and walking more than he strikes out. With the opportunities that a club like Cleveland could have in 2022, Tolman could finally get a chance at the big league roster if he continues to play well in Columbus. On Friday against St. Paul, Tolman went 3-3 and had a walk at the plate, tallying a pair of doubles and a home run.

Pitcher of the Day
After being drafted in the ninth round in 2019 by the Orioles, Connor Gillispie is now in his third season with Aberdeen after Aberdeen was moved to High-A after the pandemic season. He’s been working primarily as a multi-inning reliever, utilizing a high-spin fastball that works in the low-90s and an average slider. Friday, he came out of the bullpen for the IronBirds and tossed six shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks, striking out eight.

Two of the top prep arms in this past summer’s draft square off Saturday evening as flame-throwing Chase Petty toes the rubber for Daytona and Andrew Painter gets the ball for Clearwater. Both were first-round selections last summer and have already shown well in their full-season debuts.
