Minor League Baseball Top Performers

Another day, another minor league baseball no-hitter! Of course, there were many other incredible performances across the minors, and more impressively, all games were played, meaning a more “normal” schedule for players and teams this weekend!

Hitter of the Day
Norfolk’s Ryan McKenna was originally drafted out of New Hampshire high school by the Orioles in the fourth round of the 2015 draft. For context, 54 players and three managers have been major leaguers from New Hampshire, one of the managers (Frank Selee) has been a Hall of Famer. McKenna had a breakout season in 2018 followed up with a big Arizona Fall League performance that fall, but he struggled in 2019 in Double-A and the pandemic year allowed him to fall off the minds of many. He lost his rookie eligibility by spending most of 2021 as the Orioles’ fourth outfielder, even though he didn’t have a plate appearance in Triple-A before the season (he did hit .307 in 123 PA in 2021 when he was at Norfolk). This year, McKenna opened the season with the Orioles again, and while he did get on base, he wasn’t contributing a lot else. He’s already changed that in his first week back in Triple-A. On Wednesday with Norfolk, McKenna went 3-5 with three home runs, driving in four runs.

Pitcher of the Day
After leading the minor leagues in strikeouts through the first month, the Braves’ Royber Salinas earned a promotion from Single-A Augusta to High-A Rome. His first start after the promotion did not go well, to say the very least. Wednesday was the second start with Rome, and it went very well – very well, indeed. Salinas eased off the top end of his upper-90s fastball to sit more in the 93-95 range with the pitch and locate the pitch better. His fastball still showed excellent movement throughout the evening, and his slider was on point as well. By the time he was done, Salinas had tallied 10 strikeouts over five shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk. This is the fourth time on the season that Salinas has reached double-digit strikeouts in a start, and he now has 63 in just 29 1/3 innings pitched on the season and leads all minor league pitchers in strikeouts by 15 after Wednesday!

Today’s games

Pitching matchup of the day
Thursday’s matchup between Norfolk and Memphis features two of the highest-regarded high school pitchers in the 2018 draft. Norfolk’s Grayson Rodriguez has gone from the 11th overall selection in that draft to the consensus top pitching prospect in the game entering this season. Tampa Bay originally drafted Matthew Liberatore 16th overall, but he was traded to St. Louis, where he’ll take the mound for Memphis Thursday afternoon.
