Minor League Baseball Top Performers
The first weekend of the minor league baseball season is complete, and with that comes the first Monday off day for nearly every team in the minor leagues today. With no performances to review tomorrow, look for a “top performers of the week” post on Tuesday, something we’ll do each week throughout the season!
Hitter of the Day
The Orioles drafted Hudson Haskin out of Tulane in the second round of the 2020 draft. The outfielder showed excellent plate discipline and flashed double-plus speed despite battling a thumb fracture in 2021. The real test for a college bat is hitting upper level pitching, however, and Haskin had a coming out party Sunday with Bowie, going 3-4 with three runs and four RBI. All three of Haskin’s connections on the day left the yard as he became the first minor leaguer of 2022 with a 3-HR day. Haskin has a quirky swing that works for him but leads to some question about how his game power will translate. If he can add even 50-55 game power to a resume that includes plus to double-plus speed and defense with above-average plate recognition, he could have a significant future with the O’s.
Pitcher of the Day
One of the big “buzz” players of spring training, Daytona pitcher Julian Aguiar has only been pitching full-time for three years now, and his arm is still developing. The fastball has touched triple digits, and his slider and change have both taken big steps forward in his first offseason after the Reds picked him in the 12th round last summer out of JuCo. Aguiar showed the spring hype wasn’t just a mirage by tossing five perfect innings in his 2022 debut, striking out seven.
