Minor League Baseball Thread for May 2, 2022

Minor League Baseball Top Performers

With some family things going on, there was not a minor league baseball daily thread released Sunday, so today’s thread will include all the typical players of note for Saturday and Sunday along with the hitter of the day and pitcher of the day for both days.

Saturday Hitter of the Day
One of the top-rated prospects in the 2018 international signing class, Diego Cartaya has been on the radar as one of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ top prospects for some time. After an injury-shortened 2021, he was ranked within the top 25 prospects in the game coming into this season. Cartaya opened the season back at Rancho Cucamonga, but he’s struggled before he had a huge game on Saturday, going 4-4 with a double and a pair of home runs, scoring four runs and driving in six runs.

Saturday Pitcher of the Day
The A’s picked Jeff Criswell in the second round in 2020 out of Michigan, and the sturdy righty offers four above-average pitches. He missed much of 2021 with injuries, but he’s shown the ability to work as an inning-eating starter. Criswell tossed a complete game 7-inning shutout on Saturday in Lansing’s doubleheader, allowing one hit and one walk, striking out six.

Sunday Hitter of the Day
The Colorado Rockies originally drafted Kevin Padlo in the fifth round in 2014 out of high school, and he’s had quite the journey since. Padlo went to the Rays in the deal that brought German Marquez to Colorado, then went to the Mariners on waivers last August. Last week, as Padlo was struggling with the Mariners’ Triple-A club, he was traded for cash to the Giants, and he’s responded in a big way for Sacramento, slashing .412/.500/1.118 in four games with the River Cats. Sunday was a big display of that, as he launched three home runs as part of a 3-5 day, scoring four runs, driving in six, and even stealing a base for good measure.

Sunday Pitcher of the Day
With a handful of pitchers going at least five innings without allowing a hit on Sunday, this was a difficult choice, but Vancouver righty Trent Palmer ends up taking the top slot. The Blue Jays picked the Minnesota native out of Jacksonville in the third round in 2020 with a fastball that can reach 97 and a splitter and slider to accompany it. Command and control have been Palmer’s bugaboo to this point in his pro career, but on Sunday, he tossed six perfect innings, striking out eight Hillsboro hitters.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
