Minor League Baseball Weekly Top Performers for June 21, 2022
Minor League Baseball Weekly Top Performers
This was possibly the most difficult week so far to pick the singular winner of the hitter of the week or pitcher of the week. It was not because there weren’t worthy players, as many were worthy on both the hitter and pitcher sides, but no one player set himself apart in a significant way over the competition, so I ended up choosing two players to highlight.
Hitter of the Week
The Atlanta Braves had a 2019 draft that brought a depth of talent into the organization. One of those later picks that has significantly blossomed has been 11th-round pick Vaughn Grissom, an infielder that many saw when they were viewing teammate Riley Greene during draft scouting. Grissom came out in his pro debut and flashed power, speed, and plate discipline, immediately getting Braves fans dreaming. Last season, he followed up with an impressive season spent primarily in Single-A where he was just starting to tap into the natural plus power in his 6’3″ frame. This year, he’s continued to show out with the power while also showing off his athleticism and plate discipline. While the entire Rome offense had a huge week this week, Grissom was at the center of a lot of the production, smacking seven extra-base hits (five doubles, two home runs) while scoring 14 runs and driving in 17 runs over the week with a .516/.559/.871 slash on the week. He also stole three bases over the week for good measure.
Pitcher of the Week
With multiple players by the name of Logan Allen working in professional baseball right now, including multiple within the Cleveland Guardians organization to open the season, it can be confusing to track. The 6′ tall lefty that Cleveland chose in the second round out of Florida International has certainly attempted to garner attention due to his performance this year in Double-A with Akron, ranking among the minor league strikeout leaders all season. He had one of his best starts of the season on Thursday against Hartford, going six shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk, and striking out 11 batters.
