Minor League Baseball Weekly Top Performers

Incredibly, this is already the last weekly piece of June, meaning we will be heading into the fourth month of the minor league baseball season in next week’s piece! A good week for the San Francisco Giants organization sees both the hitter and pitcher of the week hail from that organization this week.

Hitter of the Week
The shortened 5-round 2020 MLB draft led to a number of excellent players being signed as undrafted free agents. The Giants signed Carter Williams out of North Carolina Central. Williams opened the season with Eugene, but with a number of more highly-regarded prospects getting healthy and being put on the Eugene team, Williams was bumped down to San Jose. The bat has exploded to attempt to convince the parent club that he deserves to be among those highly-regarded outfielders in the organization, as Williams slashed .652/.710/1.174 over the week with eight extra-base hits and a stolen base, scoring nine runs and driving in 10 runs while posting a 6/4 BB/K rate.

Pitcher of the Week
Many minor league evaluators felt that Giants lefty Kyle Harrison had a chance to be the top pitching prospect in the game by the end of this season. While others that were expected to graduate may not end up graduating due to injury, Harrison may still have forced his way to the top of that list with his performance this season. The Giants originally drafted Harrison in the third round in 2020 due to his high price tag that kept other teams away. He leads his impressive repertoire with a fastball that can touch the upper-90s and sits consistently in the mid-90s with excellent late movement. He’s also shown the ability this year to manipulate the horizontal movement on his four-seam fastball, giving hitters a different look on each pitch. He accompanies the fastball with a double-plus slider and a change that is a definite plus, and when he has a consistent feel for it in a game, it works as a double-plus pitch as well. Harrison moved into the minor league strikeout lead this week with an impressive showing at Double-A Richmond. The 20-year-old tossed 12 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks, striking out 20 hitters.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
