Minor League Baseball Weekly Top Performers

A perfect week over a pair of relief appearances gave the nod to the minor league baseball pitcher of the week this week. On the hitting side, one of the top performers this season finally gets a weekly note after one of the top seasons in the minors in 2022.

Hitter of the Week
Originally signed by the Kansas City Royals out of the Dominican Republic, Esteury Ruiz was included in a trade to the San Diego Padres in 2017, and he has been working his way up the San Diego system ever since. Originally a free swinger, Ruiz has refined his approach year by year as he’s advanced up the farm system and developed his power further at each level as well. What hasn’t changed is his blazing speed. Ruiz has shifted to center field after being an infielder primarily before the pandemic. His speed and instincts in the outfield have allowed him to become one of the best outfield defenders in the minors on top of polishing his offensive skills. Ruiz has been having an amazing year in 2022, starting in Double-A and hitting his way to Triple-A, combining to slash .356/.481/.644 and leading all the minor leagues with 41 stolen bases. Over the past week for El Paso, Ruiz showed off his power and speed, slashing .440/.533/.880 with three home runs and four stolen bases.

Pitcher of the Week
After closing for the University of Georgia in 2021, the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Ben Harris in the eighth round. The lefty throws a fastball that works into the mid-90s with incredible spin, especially up in the zone, and he pairs that with an impressive 12-to-6 looping curveball. He has struggled with walks since being drafted, but he’s been striking out hitters at an incredible rate. Last week with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, Harris made two appearances, tossing 3 2/3 perfect innings, striking out nine.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
