Minor League Baseball Weekly Top Performers

Some big-name prospects in minor league baseball had big weeks this week, but their productive weeks fell just short of the weeks put up by other players around the minors, leading to the spotlight put on players who perhaps have had less overall exposure to the average fan at this point. Some excellent names also popped back up this week of guys that were once big-time prospects, so let’s dig in!

Hitter of the Week
Once considered the future “chosen one” of the Yankees franchise, Estevan Florial was originally signed out of the Dominican Republic by New York in 2014. He made good on his hype in his first minor league exposure in his native country, posting a .921 OPS in the DSL. Still, it’s been an absolute roller coaster since highlighted with flashes of raw ability in power and speed mixed with absolutely mind-numbing lack of discipline both at the plate and in the field. The Yankees have stuck by Florial, and he made his MLB debut during the pandemic season. He was up for 25 plate appearances in 2021 and has received a brief call this year. The overall numbers look great this year for Florial, with a .308/.384/.521 like, with 30 extra-base hits and 26 stolen bases (in 31 attempts). The issue, as it has often been, is that he is striking out at a 30% rate. The defensive focus for Florial has sharpened significantly, and there is hope that he could stay in center field, but where he would fit in the lineup with his offensive skillset remains to be seen. Just 24, Florial is still young enough to have a productive major league career, and he made another push for a chance with a huge week in Triple-A last week, posting a .550/.600/1.350 line with four home runs and three stolen bases and even holding to a 4/5 BB/K line.

Pitcher of the Week
If you follow Driveline’s Kyle Boddy, you’ve seen plenty about Cincinnati Reds pitcher Joe Boyle this year, and it’s for good reason. Boddy was working with the Reds when they drafted Boyle out of Notre Dame in the fifth round of the 2020 draft. Boyle is a monstrous human being, listed at 6’7″ and 240 pounds, though he’s an impressively built 240. Boyle works with a fastball that has cleared triple digits in short appearances but works in the upper 90s as a starter. He pairs that with a slider and a change that has made big strides this season. Boyle’s a student of the game and has worked with the Cincinnati development team to see some huge results this season. He posted a 0.65 ERA over 55 1/3 innings, with a remarkable 42% strikeout rate. Boyle’s biggest issue is his control and command, as evidenced by his 17% walk rate this season. The fastball/slider combo is still his bread and butter, and he could have a bright future as a reliever with that, but even then, he’d need to get the control and command down first. This past week was a great example of what he can be when he’s at his best, though, as he tossed five innings, allowing a hit and a hit batsman, not walking a hitter as he struck out 12 for Dayton.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
