Minor league baseball top performers for April 22, 2022
Minor League Baseball Top Performers
Without a “huge” game from any one pitcher in minor league baseball on Thursday, the choice came among many excellent performances, and today’s top hitter and top pitcher both happen to be former early draft picks, which hasn’t been the case all the time in the selections. Let’s take a look at Thursday’s top performers and Friday’s schedule!
Hitter of the Day
Originally drafted by the San Diego Padres, Hudson Potts was traded to the Boston Red Sox during the 2020 season in a trade that sent Mitch Moreland to the Padres. Potts has always shown excellent defensive skills, but his bat has developed slowly as he has advanced through the minors, now sitting in Double-A Portland. He opened the season without a hit in his first six games of the season, but Thursday, he had a big night. Potts went 4-5 with a double and a pair of home runs, driving in five runs and scoring three. The raw offensive skills are there, and he can certainly handle the hot corner defensively, but he’s now in his sixth professional season without really seeing consistent production from those loud raw tools that once made him a first-round pick.
Pitcher of the Day
In the 2020 draft, New York prep Alex Santos II was one of my favorite high school arms for his raw ability and low mileage on his arm. The Astros drafted him in the second round with their first pick of the 2020 draft, and he threw just 41 2/3 innings last season in his pro debut, showing some of the raw control issues one might expect of a pitcher from a northern climate, but also exhibiting some tantalizing ability. Thursday’s start for Fayetteville was a great example of Sanchez at his best. He tossed just four innings, allowing no hits or runs, giving up one walk, and striking out eight. Sanchez operates with a 92-95 MPH fastball that has high spin rates as well as a sharp-breaking curve and a downer change. The control is still a work in progress, but when it comes together like it did Thursday, it’s fun to watch.

Today’s games
Pitching matchup of the day
One of the absolute elite arms in all of baseball, Eury Perez doesn’t have elite numbers in his first two starts with Double-A Pensacola, but the right-hander who just turned 19 on April 15 is absolutely worth watching every time he takes the mound. Friday, he takes the hill against a perennially tough team when the Blue Wahoos face Jayden Murray and the Montgomery Biscuits.
