Minor League Baseball daily top performers for April 18, 2022
Minor League Baseball Top Performers
The end of the second week brought a lot of great performances, but minor league baseball still has not hit its stride. Pitchers are still building up innings, and hitters are still not quite picking up pitches that they’ll be crushing by the end of the season. Let’s take a look at Sunday’s top performers!
Hitter of the Day
Originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round out of high school, Matt McLain went to UCLA, and the Cincinnati Reds selected McLain with the 17th overall pick last summer. McLain was pushed to Double-A by the Reds in an aggressive assignment, but he’s had no issues with the challenge, as evidenced by the cycle that he achieved Sunday. McLain scored three times and drove in three runs as well. Watch for more about McLain tomorrow as we highlight the top performers of the week!
Pitcher of the Day
After spending their entire 2021 draft on pitching, the Angels could use breakthroughs within their system. If Sunday’s start is an indication, perhaps Connor Van Scoyoc could be one of those. Van Scoyoc was drafted in 2018 out of high school in Iowa and dealt with injury issues and the missed 2020 season that held up his development. The 6’6″ righty retired 15 straight at one point for Inland Empire as he tossed six scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk, striking out eight. Van Scoyoc’s fastball may not reach triple digits, but his length allows his raw stuff to play up, and if he can keep it in the zone, he could have a role as a backend starter or swingman type.
