Minor league baseball daily top performers for April 17, 2022

Minor League Baseball Top Performers

The Atlanta Braves organization made it a tough decision for the top minor league baseball pitching performance of the day with two of the best performances of the entire season on Saturday. Let’s take a look at all the top performers and the schedule for an Easter Sunday!

Hitter of the Day
When he was drafted from Michigan in the third round in 2019 by the Astros, Jordan Brewer was still raw in his baseball skills, having spent notable time working with the football team. The lost 2020 season and an injury that cost him a significant amount of his 2021 season have put Brewer behind the 8-ball in development, but the raw tools are definitely still there, and he can flash those like he did Saturday with Asheville, when he went 3-4 with three runs and two RBI, tallying a double, triple, and a home run along with a pair of steals on the day. Brewer turns 25 during the season, so he will need to jump up the Astros system to remain “prospect-relevant”, but he has plenty of talent to build on to be a late-bloomer.

Pitcher of the Day
The Braves had a Southern League record-setting performance from their Mississippi starter in a weather-shortened game, which allowed Rome starter Tanner Gordon to take the day’s honors from his organizational mate. Gordon broke a record of his own, as his 14 strikeouts across six shutout innings set the high mark for the Rome Braves organization. Gordon uses his 6’5″ frame and long limbs to allow his low-90s fastball to jump on hitters and to get unique shape on his breaker, though he doesn’t get a lot of depth on the pitch and he hasn’t shown a reliable third pitch. He has an easy, repeatable delivery that could allow him to work well in a swingman role with a consistent third pitch to mix in.

I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
