Minor League Baseball Weekly Top Performers

As the minor league baseball season comes to an end, the unfortunate part is that players are receiving evaluations. Such was the case as a player on this list last week was released over the week. Hopefully, that isn’t an indicator of any future patterns!

Hitter of the Week
The St. Louis Cardinals drafted Chandler Redmond with a 32nd-round pick in the 2019 draft. Redmond is trying to be just the second player drafted from Gardner-Webb University to make the majors (one undrafted player has also made the majors). Redmond played around the infield the past two years and even played some outfield, but he’s spent all but four innings of his time this season at either first or DH. That puts more pressure on his bat, and while Redmond has offered the power, his contact skills have been lacking to some degree with Double-A Springfield in 2022. This week, however, Redmond had an impressive week, belting five home runs and driving in 14 runs. However, he ends up on this list because he achieved an incredibly rare feat on August 10. Playing against Amarillo, Redmond hit for the home run cycle – hitting a solo homer, two-run home run, three-run shot, and a grand slam.

Pitcher of the Week
One of the top pitchers in the 2016 draft class before his elbow blew, the New York Yankees still drafted Clarke Schmidt with the 16th overall pick. Schmidt missed all of the 2017 season before returning strong in 2018. He made it to Double-A in 2019 before the end of the season, giving the Yankees enough confidence to give him major league time in 2020. He’s struggled with injury since, bouncing between starting in Triple-A and the Yankee bullpen this season. When he’s on, Schmidt features a mid-90s fastball that bites hard low in the zone. He pairs that with a sharp, low-80s curve and a mid-80s slider. He also works in a four-seam fastball and a change that are fringe average. His sinker and curve could allow for a strong relief mix or he could still have a backend future, though at 26, he’s running out of time to establish that future. This week, Schmidt took the mound against Worcester and tossed six perfect innings, striking out 11.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
