Minor League Baseball Top Performers

A number of pitching appearances with no hits allowed across minor league baseball on Sunday made selecting the top performance a challenge, but the first full week of May ended with a whole host of doubleheaders. Let check out the top performers!

Hitter of the Day
The Brewers signed Jackson Chourio out of Venezuela in January 2021. He finished his time in the DSL last summer on a roll and then received tremendous reports in Arizona for his incredible bat speed and raw tools. He opened the season in extended spring training before making the jump to Carolina this past week, and his first week led to a week that will be mentioned in my top performances of the week tomorrow. Chourio is impressive defensively in center field, though his arm is below-average. All his other tools flash plus. This is what an elite prospect looks like early on, though there’s plenty of development to do. He capped off a big first week on Sunday with a 4-4 day at the plate with a walk, a double, a home run, and a stolen base.

Pitcher of the Day
Lefty Ken Waldichuk was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the 5th round in 2019. His delivery leaves plenty of hitters confused as he seems to have arms moving one way, legs moving another, and the ball just seems to suddenly be at the plate. It’s how his low-90s fastball has been able to generate such low hit rates over his minor league career. Waldichuk mixes in a strong slider and curve along with a change that can all flash plus and sit average or better. With the “funk” in his delivery, he can get off-track with his command and control at times, and that will be the final line to determine if Waldichuk is a starter or reliever. Sunday, he went five hitless innings, walking three and striking out 12 in a dominant performance for Double-A Somerset against New Hampshire.

Pitching matchup of the day
With just one scheduled game, the choice is easy. Jensen was an undrafted free agent by the Giants after the shortened 2020 draft out of Pepperdine. He had a very steady year with San Jose last season and has done similar this year as an inning-eater type. The Blue Jays signed Sem Robberse out of the Netherlands and have seen him bump up to a guy with backend rotation stuff and easy, repeatable mechanics. It’s very feasible both starters could end up in Double-A by the end of the season.
