Minor League Baseball Top Performers

With a half-dozen minor league baseball hitters powering out multiple home runs on Sunday, picking out the top hitter of the day was a challenge! Let’s check out the top performers from the final day of week seven around the minor leagues!

Hitter of the Day
The St. Louis Cardinals have a knack for developing solid hitters from selections in the middle to back of the draft, and Lars Nootbaar may simply be another in that line. Nootbaar was an eighth-round pick in 2018 by the Cardinals, and he’s worked his way up for a brief time in the majors in 2021 and a seven-game stint this season. He’s always been a guy with a low strikeout rate due to a high-contact bat, but he’s never shown the power that was unleashed on Sunday. Nootbaar was a one-man wrecking crew against Gwinnett, going 3-5 with a trio of home runs, driving in seven in the Memphis 10-4 victory. Considering that he’s now totaled 19 home runs over just shy of 700 minor league at-bats, three in one night was quite a surprise!

Pitcher of the Day
As part of their “all pitcher” 2021 draft, the Los Angeles Angels selected Arkansas righty Ryan Costeiu in the seventh round. Many saw a future reliever in Costeiu with his mid-90s fastball that showed elite spin as his dominant pitch that he paired with an inconsistent curve and a rarely used change. The Angels are stretching Costeiu out in High-A Tri-City, and his last two appearances have been as a starter, with Sunday’s being his longest appearance of the season. Costeiu went five scoreless innings, allowing a hit and no walks, striking out eight in a dominant performance against Vancouver.
