Minor League Baseball Top Performers

There were plenty of excellent performances across minor league baseball on Saturday, but the Toronto Blue Jays ended up with both individual top performers from the day, with one from A-ball and one from Triple-A. Let’s take a look!

Hitter of the Day
The Blue Jays’ final pick of the shortened 2020 draft, Zach Britton has shown his defensive flexibility this season, starting in the outfield and behind the plate. While he’s hitting just .224, he’s getting on base at an impressive .381 clip for the year. Saturday, Britton had a big day for Vancouver, going 3-3 with a double and a pair of home runs, with one of his two home runs winning the game for the Canadians against Tri-City.

Pitcher of the Day
The Chicago Cubs drafted Thomas Hatch in the third round in 2016 out of Oklahoma State. He climbed to Double-A in the Cubs org before he was traded to Toronto at the 2019 trade deadline. Hatch has developed into a backend starter, with a four-seam fastball that works in the mid-90s, a sharp-breaking two-seamer, a plus change, and an average slider that he typically controls well, but he has struggled with commanding the offspeed stuff at times. When Hatch is at his best, hitters simply cannot square him up, and that’s exactly what he did on Saturday, tossing six no-hit innings, allowing one walk, and striking out six against Syracuse.

Today’s games

Pitching matchup of the day
One of the “pop-up” prospects in the Chicago White Sox system takes on the top pitching prospect in the game Sunday in Charlotte. Davis Martin was a 14th-round selection by the White Sox out of Texas Tech where he was noted as a college arm that didn’t really have the raw stuff of pro pitchers. He’s built from there to develop his fastball into a 97 MPH heater, and his slider is a true plus secondary offering. He’s already made one spot start in the majors in 2022, which went quite well. Martin will face off against top pitching prospect Grayson Rodriguez of Norfolk. Rodriguez could be making one of his final starts for the Tides before he joins Adley Rutschman with the big league club.

I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
