Minor League Baseball Weekly Top Performers
In a week of no-hitters across minor league baseball, very few of the pitchers involved in those no-hitters get mentioned in the weekly numbers, primarily because many of the no-hitters this week were combined no-hitters, so pitchers didn’t tally enough numbers to compete for the weekly nod!
Hitter of the Week
The son of former World Series hero Luis Gonzalez, Jacob Gonzalez was originally drafted by the Giants out of high school in the second round in 2017. After a very promising pro debut that summer, he struggled to make consistent contact in future seasons. The Giants did not protect Gonzalez in the minor league Rule 5 draft this winter, and the Pirates selected him. He’s done nothing but hit all season, leading all of the minor leagues in batting average, on base average, and wRC+ through Sunday. The past week was Gonzalez’s best of the season, as Jacob posted a .632/.667/1.263 slash line over the week with a double, triple, and three home runs. Gonzalez has moved to first base full-time at this point, so he will need to hit to continue having long-term value, and at 23, he likely needs to work his way up to Double-A in 2022 to get back on track in his development, but the Pirates may have mined a gem here.
Pitcher of the Week
The Seattle Mariners drafted Bryce Miller in the fourth round last summer out of Texas A&M. He had worked as a reliever until his final season with the Aggies, when he moved to the rotation and had tremendous success. Miller works up to 97-98 as a starter, sitting 92-94. He tends to vary the shape of his fastball more now as a starter and receives very high marks from scouts on his ability to command the pitch. His best secondary pitch is an above-average slider, though he adds in an average curve and change as well to give a solid four-pitch mix. Miller is still learning his way as a starter, but he has been able to suppress home runs and attack the zone this season. This week was Miller’s 2022 at its best as he made a pair of starts, tossing 11 1/3 shutout innings, allowing five hits, no walks, and striking out 17.

Pitching matchup of the day
After a rough first season in the Cardinals system, lefty Domingo Robles is showing more of the heavy sinker that made the cardinals trade international bonus pool money for him in 2020. He takes the mound for Springfield against Wichita’s Matt Canterino, a very highly-regarded arm in the Twins’ system who continues to build innings on his arm this season.
