Minor League Baseball Daily Thread for May 11, 2022
Minor League Baseball Top Performers
Across minor league baseball on Tuesday we saw 20-run outbursts and no-hitters in the same evening, pitchers strike out double-digit hitters and batters reach base a half-dozen times. You truly never know what you might see when you come to a ballgame!
Hitter of the Day
The Braves originally drafted Braden Shewmake with the hope that he would move quickly through the system and potentially work as a high-floor infielder that could play all over. Instead, Shewmake showed a much better glove at shortstop than expected and initially showed a very good bat. His 2021 season was marred by a miserable start to the year, but he was quite good over the last four months of the season. Injuries have derailed the start to his 2022, but he’s finally getting healthy, and on Tuesday, he was on base six times for Gwinnett, with four hits, including a pair of doubles, and two walks. He scored four times and stole a base as well. His play this season in Gwinnett could impact the Braves’ upcoming offseason decision with Dansby Swanson.
Pitcher of the Day
Sometimes, good stories just keep continuing to add chapters. David Festa was on his way to a D-III college before he grew roughly a foot headed into his senior year of high school and Seton Hall found a spot for him. The 6’6″ righty lasted until the 13th round of the 2021 draft, where he ended up with an organization that immediately went to work on maximizing his long levers. He’s begun to do just that, averaging 95-96 MPH on his fastball during starts and seeing the pitch play up even faster due to his long arms bringing his release point much closer to the batter. On Tuesday night, Festa was the starter for Fort Myers and went six innings without allowing a hit, walking two and striking out 11. Two relievers followed, and neither of them allowed a hit either, giving the Mighty Mussels a combined no-hitter. Beyond the no-hitter, Festa has been quite impressive this season and is a guy not just Twins fans should be keeping an eye on.
