Minor League Baseball Top Performers
The first full week of May brought some focus on who is truly succeeding this season in minor league baseball and who simply had a hot week or two. As we head toward Memorial Day, that will definitely iron out even further.
Hitter of the Week
The Dodgers drafted Jacob Amaya in 2017 out of high school in the 11th round. He has moved up the Dodgers’ system slow and steady, but when the pandemic hit, he took the time to do some significant swing changes to attempt to tap into his raw power. The results in 2021 were not great, as Amaya struck out at a 20%+ rate for the first time in his career. He’s adjusted that swing coming into this year, and his walk rate is back to previous levels with his strikeout rate back down, even lower than before. However, he’s hitting for significantly more power due to putting a lot more balls on a line, with his ground ball rate down from 46.5% in 2021 to 27.9% this year and his line drive rate up to 27.9% from 17.9%. Amaya has shown himself more than capable at shortstop, and with his performance at the plate, he’s skyrocketing up lists this season. This past week, Amaya hit .533/.632/1.067 with three doubles, a triple, a home run, and a stolen base with four walks and a strikeout.
Pitcher of the Week
The Midwest League had some tremendous performances over the week, but the one that really stood out in viewing was TJ Shook. He was an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina in the shortened 2020 draft. Shook has worked with the Brewers and his change is one of the most impressive this side of fellow Brewer hurler Devin Williams‘ airbender. Over the week, Shook tossed 10 scoreless innings, allowing eight hits without allowing a walk, striking out 12.

Pitching matchup of the day
With many teams using the Mother’s Day weekend as a barometer to either bring up players from extended spring or promote players who opened the season performing well, there are a significant amount of “TBD” starters in the Tuesday listing. One of the few with both starters names is the Pensacola and Rocket City matchup. Brett Kerry continues his work as one of the top-performing pitchers in the Angels system for the Trash Pandas while George Soriano has been a guy that shows impressive raw stuff but can often struggle to locate that stuff in the strike zone for the Blue Wahoos.
