Minor League Baseball Top Performers

A pair of Miami Marlins arms made strong cases for the top minor league baseball pitching performance of the day, but in the end, a young Blue Jay took the honor Friday with what has become “just another day” in a big season for the young lefty this year.

Hitter of the Day
The Philadelphia Phillies drafted Darick Hall out of Dallas Baptist in the 14th round in 2016 knowing he had prodigious power and hoping he could offer other things around that part of his game. He moved quickly through the system by bashing baseballs, topping 20 home runs every full minor league season until last year in Triple-A. He’s back to his mashing ways this season, among the slugging leaders in the minors’ top level. Friday, he crushed the ball in a doubleheader for Lehigh Valley, combining to go 6-9 at the plate with a pair of doubles and three home runs on the day, scoring five runs and driving in six across the twin bill.

Pitcher of the Day
In the 2021 draft, Ricky Tiedemann was known to be one of the top lefty arms coming out of the JuCo ranks. The Toronto Blue Jays nabbed him in the third round, and he’s quickly showing that he’s going to move up levels quickly in the Jays’ system, with a 0.90 ERA and 0.75 WHIP over 20 innings this season so far, striking out 33 unfortunate opposing hitters. On Friday, Tiedemann dominated the Bradenton lineup for Dunedin, going five perfect innings, striking out nine hitters. He primarily used his fastball, sprinkling in his change and slider. He topped out at 97 MPH with the fastball, averaging 95, and generating 14 of his 18 swings and misses with the heater. His secondary stuff is still progressing, which is why Toronto started him in Single-A, and how confident the organization is in those secondaries will likely determine the speed of his ascent through the organization if he keeps putting up results on the mound.

Today’s games

Pitching matchup of the day
Saturday features two potential future rotation members for Oakland and Cleveland in a High-A matchup. The A’s drafted Lansing’s Jeff Criswell in the second round of the 2020 draft out of Michigan. He missed much of 2021 with injury issues, but he has the potential to have four above-average or better pitches when healthy. Opposing him for Lake County will be Gavin Williams, the Guardians’ first-round pick in 2021 out of East Carolina. He was a slow developer in college, but he’s continued to show that his late development was real in his pro debut thus far.
