Minor League Baseball Top Performers

While there were some impressive pitching performances at the team level across minor league baseball on Wednesday, finding individual performances was not an easy task. Hitters were tough to choose among, though, so highlighting a top prospect that’s opened the season well but not been featured as a hitter of the day yet was a worthy pick.

Hitter of the Day
One of the top prep hitters in the 2018 draft, Nolan Gorman slipped down the first round until the Cardinals selected him with the 19th overall pick. He struggled in his first full season in 2019 before the pandemic season, but he bounced back significantly in 2021 while also experimenting with a new position as the Cardinals moved him to second base in order to get his bat to the major leagues with Nolan Arenado entrenched at the hot corner for years to come. Gorman has been one of the top performers in Triple-A this year, with a 1.230 OPS and 10 home runs, but he’s not been recognized here yet, but his Wednesday against Durham was impressive as he went 4-5 with a double and a pair of home runs, scoring three times and driving in four runs.

Pitcher of the Day
The Mets drafted Keyshawn Askew last summer in the 10th round out of Clemson. The lefty has worked as a multi-inning reliever for St. Lucie at this point as he primarily utilizes his plus slider and his average sinker once through a lineup very effectively. Wednesday, things were working very well for Askew, as he threw 85% of his pitches from his sinker/slider combination, generating 10 swings and misses. His fastball works around 90 MPH and tops out at 94 while his sweeping slider works in the mid-70s, so he’s not a high-velocity guy, and his change is below average, so Askew has a bulk reliever profile from the left side, but that will require him to fill up the zone. His Wednesday line was five perfect innings, striking out six hitters.

Today’s games

Pitching matchup of the day
In 2021, few pitchers saw their stock rise as much due to performance as Joey Estes in the Braves organization. He was part of the Matt Olson trade this offseason and has struggled out of the gate with Lansing, but he will hope to get right as he faces Lake County. The Captains starter in the game will be Lenny Torres, who was the 41st overall selection in the 2018 draft and is working to build innings onto his oft-injured, albeit very talented arm.
