Minor League Baseball Top Performers

A pair of minor league baseball prospects that have been heard about for a while, rose up rankings, and fell back down due to a combination of “shiny new toy syndrome” and perceived lack of progress from the players had big days on Tuesday to claim the top hitter and top pitcher of the day.

Hitter of the Day
Born in New York, Luis Garcia moved to the Dominican Republic when he was very young, signing with the Washington Nationals as a consensus top-5 player in his international class. One of the youngest players in his signing class, he moved quickly through the minor league system, making his major league debut in 2020 and hitting .276. The quick rise through the minors really didn’t let all of his tools develop, however, and he’s struggled to translate all of his tools to major league production. Garcia still doesn’t turn 22 until May, making him still one of the younger players in Triple-A, even though he opened the season with nearly 2,000 professional plate appearances. He’s hit well this far and tapped into his raw power more frequently along with showing a very strong glove at second base while passing at short when playing there. Tuesday, Garcia was on base five times with four hits and a walk, scoring three times, driving in four runs, and hitting a pair of home runs.

Pitcher of the Day
The St. Louis Cardinals selected Zack Thompson out of Kentucky in the first round of the 2019 draft, and many felt that, once again, a top college draft arm had fallen to the Cardinals, who would make great use of his talents. Thompson was considered by many as the second-best college arm in that season’s draft, so to have him fall to #19 overall felt like a coup for the Cards. He had a solid showing in his pro debut, but then he missed 2020 due to COVID. The Cardinals jumped Thompson up to Triple-A in 2021 coming out of the pandemic, and the results were disastrous. Thompson posted a 7.06 ERA for the season with a nearly-13% walk rate. He was sent to the Arizona Fall League, but the results were even worse, with his walk rate ballooning to 18.5%. He returned to Memphis to open the season, and he’s shown much better, posting a 24/2 K/BB ratio over 20 1/3 innings. Tuesday, Thompson went 6 2/3 shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk, striking out nine. Thompson’s 91-95 MPH fastball velocity has returned, and he works with a slider, change, and curve that are all average pitches, but coming from the left side, if he can command that quartet of pitches, he could work as a backend starter or multi-inning option from the bullpen.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
