Minor League Baseball Top Performers
While the big leagues struggled offensively, those issues didn’t translate to minor league baseball, with more than a dozen teams scoring 10+ runs each of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday over the past week. That led to plenty of options for strong individual performances on the offensive side for hitter of the week choice. Even with that offense, there were plenty of strong choices on the pitching side as well.
Hitter of the Week
The Washington Nationals originally drafted Blake Perkins in the second round out of Arizona high school in 2015. The switch-hitting outfielder tantalized with raw talent before the Nationals traded him to the Royals as part of the deal to acquire Kelvin Herrera. Perkins became a minor league free agent this offseason and signed with the Yankees organization. He’s shown well with the Double-A Somerset club thus far, but this past week was exceptionally good as Perkins slashed .474/.524/1.316 with a pair of doubles, a triple, and four home runs. He displayed his athleticism with three steals as well. Perkins plays plus defense in center field, and he’s unlocked his power to go along with plus speed. He could be a find for the Yankees as a fourth outfielder.
Pitcher of the Week
Many felt that the 2021 draft featured Jackson Jobe and Andrew Painter at the head of the prep arm class and then a pretty notable tier to the next group behind them. Painter certainly has done nothing to dissuade that opinion in his full-season debut this year. Standing 6’7″, Painter is more than just pure power, even though he can touch triple digits with the fastball. He only used his fastball and above-average slider in his dominant Saturday outing, allowing just one baserunner over five innings, striking out 14, touching 99.8 MPH, and sitting 96-97 throughout the entire outing with his heater. Painter has a curve and a change that I liked quite a bit in high school video, so he definitely can use more than just the two pitches. It will be interesting to see how the Phillies have him work his pitches in over the course of the year.

Pitching matchup of the day
Arkansas righty George Kirby nearly claimed a rotation spot out of spring training with the Mariners, and he’s been impressive thus far for the Travelers. Opposing him will be Chris Vallimont for Wichita who has a world of raw talent on the mound but has struggled with his location since the pandemic season after a very promising 2019 season.
