Minor League Baseball Daily Thread for April 25, 2022
Minor League Baseball Top Performers
Offense again ruled the day on Sunday as minor league baseball finished up its second full week of the season. No games will be played today, so remember that tomorrow’s daily thread will include hitter of the week, pitcher of the week, top weekly performers, and the overall minor league leaders. Make sure to check it out!
Hitter of the Day
Through his first four pro seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization, Herard Gonzalez displayed excellent glove skills and a sharp eye at the plate, but his contact skills have always been in question. The lean Dominican has shown more power with Quad Cities this year than in previous years while shifting primarily to second base. His arm is fringe-average, so a long-term home on the left side of the infield is not likely in the future, but he could handle the glovework there in a pinch and if the added strength he’s shown in his swing this year is real, Gonzalez could potentially work long-term at second or left field. Sunday, he put on a show, going 3-3 with three walks, scoring three times and driving in six, tallying a triple and a pair of home runs on the day.
Pitcher of the Day
One of the top lefties in last summer’s draft coming out of the University of Virginia, Andrew Abbott showed well in his pro debut for the Reds last season, but he’s really started out the season strong for High-A Dayton. Sunday was a big day out of the bullpen for Abbott with the Dragons. He took the bulk of the innings after Luis Castillo opened the game on a rehab assignment. Abbott tossed six one-run innings, allowing three hits and two walks, striking out 11.
