Minor League Baseball Top Performers

With 16 minor league baseball teams scoring 10 or more runs on Saturday, there were plenty of impressive individual offensive efforts Saturday along with a pair of Phillies’ arms among the top pitching performances for the day.

Hitter of the Day
The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Jacob Amaya out of California high school in the 11th round in 2017. He’s shown a steady infield glove with an average toolset offensively. He’s retooled his swing to generate more loft over the past two years and returned to Tulsa this year with excellent numbers this year so far. Saturday night was an indication of the breakout he’s having at the plate, as Amaya went 5-5 with three runs and six RBI, knocking out a pair of doubles and a pair of home runs. Amaya could very well end up the next unheralded prospect that finds his way to the Dodgers roster to contribute.

Pitcher of the Day
While many organizations shy away from taking prep arms in the first round, the Philadelphia Phillies have picked two of the top arms in the middle of the first round in the past two drafts, with both having big days Saturday. Andrew Painter, the Phillies’ selection at the 13th overall pick last year, had the better of the two big performances. Painter used his fastball and slider exclusively over his five-inning, scoreless outing, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out 14. Painter touched 99.8 MPH with his fastball, sitting 96-98 throughout the game, using it 70% of the time in the game, mixing in his slider ranging from 78-86 MPH. He generated 20 swings and misses during the start. With a 30/3 K/BB over 12 innings without an earned run this year so far, it wouldn’t surprise to have Painter move quickly to High-A.

Today’s games

Pitching matchup of the day
Watching high ceiling pitching prospects find their way can be a fun exercise. Columbia and Down East will feature such a matchup, with Columbia’s Ben Hernandez, who has one of the better changeups in all of the minor leagues and is learning how to work his breaking stuff and his mid-90s fastball around it. The Wood Ducks technically have “TBD” listed, but it is Winston Santos‘ spot in the rotation and the exciting diminutive righty has electric raw stuff, but he is working to locate that stuff consistently.
