Minor League Baseball Daily Thread for April 23, 2022
Minor League Baseball Top Performers
Some very elite performances from lower-level pitchers across minor league baseball on Friday couldn’t outweigh the first complete game tossed in voting for pitcher of the day. Let’s take a look at the rest of the top performers from the day and Saturday’s schedule, including a doozy of a pitching matchup!
Hitter of the Day
The Colorado Rockies signed Ezequiel Tovar out of Venezuela, and he had a rather nondescript first two pro years as he worked his way through short-season ball. In 2021, in his age 19 season, he really impressed many with his performance across both A-ball levels, showing power and speed while handling shortstop with very sure hands. While his numbers weren’t amazing in the Arizona Fall League, many came away impressed as Tovar was one of the youngest players at the AFL and wasn’t overwhelmed. He’s hit well overall to start the season with Hartford, but Friday was definitely a show of his broad skill set, going 3-4, scoring three runs and driving in four, walking once, and stealing a base. He slapped a double and drove out two home runs, including a walk-off game-winning home run to give the Yard Goats a victory.
Pitcher of the Day
Certainly not a “prospect” by any means, Cesar Valdez actually made his major league debut in 2010, when many guys who are being viewed as prospects now were in elementary school. An older signee when he was originally signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks at 21, he reached the majors in 2010 and then has bounced between the Mexican league and bit appearances with major league clubs, appearing in the minors with the Pirates, Marlins, and Astros and in the majors with the Blue Jays and the Athletics. He had returned to the Mexican League when the Orioles signed him for the 2020 season, and he impressed out of the bullpen. The Angels signed him to a minor league deal in March, and in his third start of the season for Salt Lake on Friday, the 37-year-old Valdez threw a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks, striking out eight.

Today’s games
Pitching matchup of the day
When Northwest Arkansas and Frisco take to the mound tonight, two of the most highly touted pitchers in recent draft history will be on the hill. Asa Lacy will open the game for the Naturals after being the fourth overall selection in the 2020 draft for the Royals. He will be opposed by Jack Leiter, the second overall pick in the 2021 draft by the Rangers. The game will be available for MLB.tv subscribers as well, so this is definitely a gem that should be available to watch!
