Minor League Baseball top performers for April 15, 2022
Minor League Baseball Top Performers
With a number of games rained out on Wednesday, Thursday’s schedule included a host of doubleheaders and suspended games. That led to a bit more time to sort out everything, but the cream rose to the top all the same!
Hitter of the Day
Australian Aaron Whitefield tantalized the Minnesota Twins system for a number of years with raw tools but never could refine all of those tools into baseball production. He signed with the Angels and is playing with Double-A Rocket City this season. He’s had a very big year overall, but the suspended game that finished yesterday along with the full 9-inning game that was played yesterday for Whitefield saw him go 4-6 with three runs scored, a pair of RBI, three walks, a home run, and this double that was nearly another home run. For good measure, he used his double-plus speed to nab four bases between the two games, giving him a minor league-leading eight on the season so far.
Pitcher of the Day
In his debut for the Augusta GreenJackets, Royber Salinas struck out 11 over 4 1/3 innings. He actually improved in his start Thursday against Myrtle Beach, striking out 13 over five innings, allowing one hit and no walks. Salinas works with a fastball that can work to 97-98 and sits 93-96 with plenty of life, especially up in the zone. His slider flashes double-plus action, but he’s been inconsistent with the pitch before this season. That’s been his story overall coming into this year, as command and control have slowed his ascent in the Braves system, but with just two walks over his first two starts, there are signs that he’s taking a step forward. The big thing for him will be finding an offspeed pitch to complement his fringe-average curve if he hopes to stay in the rotation. (Video from his first start)
