Minor League Baseball Players of the Week for July 26, 2022

Minor League Baseball Weekly Top Performers

All-Star break at the major league level led to a break for minor league baseball. That meant a shorter week to accumulate stats for hitters and less pitchers to choose from in top performances. There are still plenty who had outstanding showings, however.

Hitter of the Week
The San Francisco Giants originally signed Alexander Canario in 2016 out of the Dominican Republic. He was then part of the package the Cubs received in return for Kris Bryant last July. Canario began the season with South Bend before earning a promotion to Double-A Tennessee. He struggled initially at the level, but in July, he’s hit .371/.513/.839 with seven home runs and five stolen bases, posting and impressive 18/12 BB/K. Canario reminds of Jason Heyward defensively in the outfield – elite in right field, but can pass in center. His bat could be impressive with the ability to hit for power and steal double-digit bases. In three games this past week, Canario hit .636/.765/1.455 with three doubles and two home runs, posting an impressive 6/1 BB/K ratio.

Pitcher of the Week
The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Brandon Pfaadt in the fifth round of the 2020 draft out of Division II Bellarmine University. He was able to push up to Double-A quickly in 2021. At 6’4″ and 220 pounds, Pfaadt is built to handle a heavy workload, though he’s struggled at times at hitter-friendly Amarillo this season, despite ranking among the minor league leaders in strikeouts all season. Pfaadt pounds the strike zone with a mix of four average to above-average pitches, sitting 92-94 and touching 97-98 with his fastball that he can shape in multiple ways. He works in a slider, curve, and change to generate plenty of swing and miss as well as groundballs. Over the past week, Pfaadt tossed six shutout innings, allowing five hits and a walk, striking out 11.

After 6 years of writing for FanSided on various sites and offering contributions to various other websites, family changes have encouraged me to start this site. I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
