Minor League Baseball Daily Thread for May 18, 2022
Minor League Baseball Top Performers
One of the top pop-up minor league baseball prospects this season finally had a day that allowed him to be featured. One of the downfalls of a daily thread like this is that the guys who get picked out as the top performer of the day may not be a guy who shows up consistently with excellent daily performances, and that’s the case here.
Hitter of the Day
Following the tradition of many elite prospects from the island of Curacao, Ceddanne Rafaela has emerged from a low-priced signee by the Red Sox in 2017 with extremely high defensive grades to a guy whose bat has emerged. Many compare the right-handed Rafaela to Ozzie Albies due to his size and the ability to impact the ball despite his small stature, but he also brings an excitement and passion to the game that emulates Albies as well. Rafaela has been a quick climber up many lists this season with his early-season performances, but Tuesday allowed him to work his way into this spot for the first time this season. Rafaela hit for the cycle for Greenville Tuesday, scoring three runs and driving in two along the way.
Pitcher of the Day
A potential scouting find for the Mets, Mike Vasil was drafted in the eighth round last summer out of Virginia after a nondescript college career. Vasil was an elite high school prospect that suffered an arm injury, but he seemed to finally get on track with pro instruction, showing impressive stuff, reaching 97 and working with three offspeed pitches that all sit average and can show better. His control was inconsistent as a collegian but has been consistently above-average if even better as a pro. He went seven innings on Tuesday, allowing two hits, an unearned run, and no walks while striking out 11 against the Yankees’ Single-A club, and now sports a 1.85 ERA and 0.94 WHIP on the season over 34 innings.

Pitching matchup of the day
Troy Percival‘s son Cole Percival was originally an undrafted free agent in 2020, and he’s worked as a starter primarily this season with success in the Dodgers season. He’s opposed for Great Lakes on Wednesday by Lansing’s Jeff Criswell who is quickly becoming one of the A’s top prospects overall since being drafted in the second round of the 2020 draft.
