Minor League Baseball Daily Thread for August 18, 2019
At times it’s hard to see the point in spending the heavy time many of us do in minor league baseball. Then, you read an anniversary like today, from Baseball-Reference’s “on this day” for August 18th. You see that Roberto Clemente, still in the Dodgers system, got national exposure on his 20th birthday in 1954 when he uncorked a powerful throw from right field to get the final out of the game at home plate, nabbing the potential game-tying run and allowing Montreal to win 8-7. Clemente would go on to be drafted by the Pirates in the 1954 Rule 5 draft that offseason and go on to be one of the game’s iconic players.
Today would have been Clemente’s 85th birthday. Who are we watching in minor league baseball that could be the next Hall of Fame player to debut? Let’s look at Saturday’s top performers:
