Minor League Baseball Top Performers
Hitter of the Day
Pedro Leon came to the Astros with big expectations from Cuba last season. He struggled with injury and performance over the course of the 2021 season. His first game with Sugar Land was much better, however, as he went 3-5 at the plate, lacing a double and showing off his plus speed when he took off and stole a base in the seventh inning. The biggest question remaining for Leon is his defense, and that was still present as he committed two errors at shortstop on Opening Day.
Pitcher of the Day
Interestingly, the guy who threw the first pitch of the minor league season gets this honor. Nick Allgeyer started the first game of the day for the Buffalo Bisons. The lefty returned to Triple-A and attacked the zone from his low 3/4 arm angle for six innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six for Buffalo.
