Minor League Baseball Top Performers

Thursday saw some elite performances across minor league baseball, but the top performances of the day were turned in at the highest level at the plate and on the mound.

Hitter of the Day
A premium athlete in college, Ryan Boldt was picked in the second round by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2016 with some raw edges still to refine in his game. He then had Tommy John surgery that cost him the 2019 season before the pandemic year of 2020. It’s left Boldt at Triple-A with plenty of talent but also issues with his plate discipline and free swinging. The raw talent is still there, however, and that leads to games like he had Thursday, when Boldt went 4-4 with three home runs for Durham, driving in five runs.

Pitcher of the Day
Originally signed out of Venezuela by the Red Sox, Jhonathan Diaz was signed as a minor league free agent by the Los Angeles Angels in November 2020. He made his MLB debut last season for three appearances. He opened 2022 in Triple-A for the Angels, and he’s kept the ball in the park while limiting contact, but Thursday was definitely the height of that, as he went eight scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, striking out seven batters. Diaz is a guy with a wide array of pitches, but none of them exactly overpowering, topping out in the low-90s with his fastball, and working with a slider, curve, and change. He could work as a bulk reliever or spot starter from the right side as long as he continues to keep the ball on the ground.

Today’s games

Pitching matchup of the day
Two prep pitchers from the same draft class come together in Friday’s Jersey Shore vs. Aberdeen tilt, but with two very different backgrounds and different statuses. Ben Brown was drafted in the 33rd round by the Phillies and will start for the BlueClaws, hoping to find some level of control as his raw stuff is impressive when he can simply put it in the zone. D.L. Hall toes the rubber for Aberdeen in his season debut as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, a first-round pick in that 2017 draft by the Orioles that’s developed slowly, but he has turned into one of the top prospects in the game.

I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
