Minor League Baseball Top Performers

After the first “off day” of the minor league baseball season, games were back in full force on Tuesday, with some incredible performances at the plate and on the mound, which made selecting the top performers a challenge!

Hitter of the Day
The Phillies drafted T.J. Rumfield out of Virginia Tech in the 12th round last summer. He comes with a baseball background, as his father played for 12 years in the minors across five organizations but never got a major league shot. The Yankees saw something that they liked in Rumfield, and they acquired him in the offseason in a four-player deal. Rumfield has an impressive power stroke from the left side. Whether he’ll stick as a third baseman or not is a question, but the bat is definitely real, as he showed Tuesday for Hudson Valley, when he went 5-5 with two runs scored, four RBI, hit a double, a homer, and added in a stolen base for good measure to edge out a host of excellent performances.

Pitcher of the Day
Okay, the hitter choice was much more of a challenge than the pitcher selection today. While he may not have had the strikeout stats that other starters posted on the day, it’s hard not to argue that Max Meyer put up the most dominant start of the day. The #3 overall selection in the 2020 draft opened in Double-A in 2021 and some were underwhelmed with his stuff being “good, but not great” at that level, but he began to tick up at the very end of the year and a late-season promotion to Jacksonville only showed that, as he struck out 17 in 10 Triple-A innings. Meyer returned to Triple-A to open 2022, and in his second start of the season on Tuesday, he dominated Durham, going 5 perfect innings, striking out 8 Bulls hitters, needing only 53 pitches, using his upper-90s fastball and one of the best sliders in all of baseball to breeze through the outing. The Marlins’ system is loaded, but he should spend time in Miami sooner rather than later at this pace.

I spend a ton of time watching baseball at all levels, but I love watching minor league baseball on milb.tv as I'm hours away from the closest minor league team. This is an effort of all those games I enjoy on a daily basis!
